Piper's Spit -- Read What Dr. Richard Yen's Take On It (And a Lot More)

By: SW

Most of you have seen the scene of Piper smoothing out her little brother's hair with her spit while Sarah Palin, their mother, was giving her acceptance speech in the RNC. If not, here it is:

One of the most respected scientists in the Asian American community, Dr. Richard Yen, wrote about Piper's spit and much more:

It is hard to find anything good to say about spit. Even boys in a fist-fight know not to use spit, unless he wants a bloody nose.

On Friday, in between caring for my patients, I passed by the doctor’s lounge and saw an advertisement from MSNBC/CNN. It was a clip about “Piper's Hair Gel.” I saw this 6-year old licking her palm to smooth out her baby brother's hair. Then it dawned on me it was a sarcastic political ad. They were laughing at that 6-year old for doing what she did, in public.

That night I saw the clip again, of the same girl doing the same thing, except it was a longer clip. She was shown kissing her brother repeatedly, before she applied spit to his hair.

I guess the media had much to laugh about. Here was a girl who did not seem to know that she was being videotaped. Doesn't she know she is sitting in a national convention? Doesn't she have anything better to use than her own spit?

Much had been said about women's rights in the last few decades. Usually they are code words in support of abortion. We were told that a woman can do anything she wants with her body.

What we were not told was that it was not her body. It happens to be inside her body; but it is not her body. What is destroyed is not the mother's body; not even a piece of it. Every cell that was removed belonged to someone else. None of the DNA matched hers. The body being destroyed is not the mother's. It is the baby's.

I do not believe evangelicals have a problem with abortion. By this I mean few evangelical ladies need to undergo abortion. So why are they so passionate about it?

Abortion is the taking of an innocent life; whose consent was never sought before it was “terminated.” It is a fundamental question of fairness. Why is the person most affected by this decision not given a choice?

The pro-abortion forces understand the audience's emotions. If the debate is framed as a question of fairness, they lose. So they talked about quality of life. What if the baby is born defective? What if the mother does not love the baby any more? If a dog is run over by a car, we will all rush there to help. If the dog's leg is broken, someone may even offer to pay for the vet's fees. No one will remotely suggest “Kill it.” No one will ever think of terminating it because of the “added financial burden” to society. But if a baby is shown to be defective in a test, people would want the mother to abort, and they believe that in so doing, they are doing the “right thing.”

The Spartans killed every baby that the elders deemed “imperfect.” The elders loved that system. They had perfect control over the entire society, all in the name of “deciding for the people.” Guess what happened to their glorious culture? If you visit Greece today, the tourist guide will tell you there is nothing to see in Sparta. Athens, however, is a different story.

I cannot get rid of the image of Piper smoothing out Trig's hair. Yes, the adults are doing their thing. To make sure they get the message across, the adults need Styrofoam Greek pillars and huge video screens showing the flag. But that is their business. They have a national convention to run. They need to impress other adults.

Piper had no one to impress. But she had her baby brother under her care. So she kissed him; she did what she could to make him look even prettier.

Trig's mother agreed that he is not normal; but “he is perfect.” How do you tell a mother that her baby does not look perfect to you?

So I see love, not only from this young girl to her brother, but the love within the family.

I see hope also. For every Piper caught on tape there are thousands of little girls quietly doing their duties at home, with love. The mass media do not know when they mock and when they sneer, they do it to themselves.

That little bit of spit is why I love America.
